Police detain children, lawyer of Benue’s wanted killer

The Benue State Police Commissioner, Mr Bashir Makama, on Thursday said the command had arrested and detained two children, a sister and a lawyer, Mr. Terna Jirgba of the wanted gang leader, Mr Terwase Akwaza, alias Ghana as accomplices.

Makama, who disclosed this during a press conference by the Benue State Security Council at the Police Headquarters in Makurdi, said the arrested individuals would not be released from detention until Akwaza and members of his gang were apprehended.

He said, “What led to the arrest of the lawyer was that he (Jirgba) did not indicate that he was a lawyer. He was given a nickname as a collaborator or member of the gang. Concerning Ghana’s children and sister, we are keeping the children and his sister safe pending when he will come for them or the police will arrest him.”

Makama said it was when the Nigerian Bar Association came out and further inquiries were conducted that it was discovered that Jirgba was a lawyer.

He added that the lawyer was still under investigation and that as soon as it was concluded the report would be made known.
The commissioner further disclosed that a joint operation by the security agencies in the state was carried out on Gbishe in search of Akwaza in connection with armed robberies, kidnappings, assassinations and cattle rustlings.

Makama who later conducted journalists on an inspection of vehicles, weapons, ammunitions, weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, money and charms said to have been recovered during the August 6, 2016 operation at Gbishe and others, said the police recovered N1m from one of Ghana’s boys as part of the ransom on a victim, Mrs Nwobodo who was kidnapped in Katsna-Ala.

He solicited for information from members of the public on the whereabouts of Akwaza and some of his gang members, adding that the security agencies were determined to arrest them to face criminal charges.
