Team GB's Ellie Downie suffered a sickening fall on her neck - before returning to the arena to complete the competition.
17-year-old Downie, competing in her first Olympic Games , was competing in the women's gymnastics qualifying round in Rio.
Downie, who had already safely negotiated her way through the bars and beam, before beginning the floor potion of the competition when she suffered her freak accident.
Nottingham-born Downie is an accomplished and powerful tumbler but while somersaulting she failed to get her body all the way around and landed on the mat directly on her head and neck.

Teammates and coaches rushed to Downie's aid

 
Downie immediately got to her feet to try and finish her routine but stepped off after refusing her final tumble.
"I crunched my neck," she said afterwards after her teammates and coaches rushed to her aid.
"It sounds pretty gross but I just felt dizzy before my last tumble."
But after leaving the arena for treatment Downie returned to complete the vault landing both well.

Downie landed both vaults well to leave GB well placed


"They put me in a wheelchair and I was like, 'I don't need a wheelchair'," she added.
"I was better than I thought so I came back out and vaulted."
Her efforts left Team GB in third place in the rankings assuring them of a place in Tuesday's final.
